The definition of anime, according to wikipedia, is "hand-drawn and computer animation originating from Japan". The tradition of anime goes back to the 1960s, and a lot of it was already around on tv when I was young. There are a lot of works to choose from! If you choose a canon that was a book/manga before it became an anime, or if there's a live action show in addition to the anime, then please choose source material from the anime, not the other adaptations. Anime can be in serial format, but it can also be movies - the deciding factor is that it was produced in Japan.

P.S.: the comm has been backed up to your-favourites.dreamwidth.org. Most people who took part in the opinion poll didn't have a strong preference and said that they'd be okay with continuing here as long as LJ stays accessible, but would be okay with moving to dw if it becomes necessary. One person stated they'd really very much prefer to stay, so for now we're staying.

If anyone has trouble accessing the comm on LJ, let me know (on dw), and we're moving. I don't want to split the comm into two parts, because feedback/comments on posts is an important part of this comm, and this works best if everyone looks at the same comm with all the posts in the same place. I know some other icon comms have already moved; I'll keep an eye on the situation.
